Introducing: WasteX

Today I am thrilled to share with you - WasteX a new way to automate waste & recycling operations, when we started out on our waste cycle journey we did many things that didn't scale, learning the a-z on waste/recycling compliance, sorting through materials ourselves and visiting each site to manually collect data and monitor collection methods and disposal practices firsthand. We even designed sophisticated cascade sensors to detect leaks in landfills and biogas plants. When we went through the CTO accelerator in S23 - keeping climate technology apart of our story. But as we've grown, we wanted to automate as much of the waste & recycling operations stack as possible.

WasteX is here to help cities and businesses regain control, while empowering leaders to adopt the tools they need.

Why Now?

In 2019, $1 out of every $3 invested in real estate came from ESG funds. As of today, this proportion has increased significantly. Recent data indicates that ESG assets under management are expected to reach $50 trillion by 2025, representing approximately one-third of the world's total projected invested assets. These ESG investors have targets and objectives around Scope 3 emissions reductions, of which waste plays a key component. Currently, cities, sustainability teams, and real estate leaders managing large communities or a global market of properties must measure waste, recycling, and ESG data more routinely and accurately. With existing tools and services, this requires significant time, focus, and investment. This led us to ask, can there be a better way to help the world’s leading teams get what they need 10x faster, more accurately, while saving money? Existing waste and recycling operations are highly manual, plagued with poor experiences, and lack support when it matters. By building a new tool to automate critical tasks and making operations cloud-connected, the possibilities for how WasteX can help are truly endless.

Why Us?

Our team brings a unique set of skills from various fields—technology, sustainability, real estate, physics, and data science—with deep expertise in building products people love. We’re committed to building something of true value for the world’s leading teams that manage where people live, work, and play.

What is the Core Problem You Are Solving? Why is This a Big Problem?

Our platform addresses the inefficiencies and excessive costs associated with traditional waste management practices. Many businesses face unpredictable waste service charges, missed pickups, and overage fees due to a lack of real-time monitoring and data-driven decision-making. This leads to financial waste, operational disruptions, and an inability to meet sustainability goals effectively.

What Made Us Decide to Work on It?

1. Financial Burden:

  • U.S. spends $350B annually on waste management
  • Inefficient, highly-manual and disconnected, waste & recycling leads to high and often unpredictable costs, businesses + cities overpay for services they do not fully utilize or incur penalties from vendors and fines.

2. Operational Inefficiencies:

  • Lack of accurate data and monitoring results in poor decision-making, leading to missed pickups, overflow issues, and increased operational disruptions.

3. The Data Landfill

  • Leads to increased costs and inefficiencies for real estate, CFO's and sustainability leaders, as well as cities, by hindering their ability to accurately track spending, waste metrics, optimize resource allocation, and meet business goals.

4. Environmental Impact:

  • Inefficient waste management contributes to higher landfill usage and hinders recycling efforts. This impacts a business’s ability to meet sustainability targets and business goals.

What is Your Long-Term Vision? If You Truly Succeed, What Will Be Different About the World?

Our long-term vision is to automate the world’s waste and recycling operations. Imagine a world where waste and recycling workflows and data are autonomous, with automation tools integrated into the foundation of essential services. The WasteX journey started almost 8 years ago with our founders’ first startup Hylas Energy (Downtown Brooklyn Partnership Smart City Startup of 2018), where the team designed, engineered, and built the world’s first indoor ‘food waste to energy’ appliance - at the world's leading hub New Lab in Brooklyn, NY. Since then, solving some of today’s most important problems has been a forethought.
